May 2012 Beauty Article: Long Wearing Eye Makeup

RECIPE FOR ALL DAY “BOMB PROOF” EYE COLOUR

A few basic steps and your peepers can look great all day and into evening for drinks with friends, your hubby, or a new squeeze!  So, if you’ve got a special date planned or event to go to, and want to prevent makeup meltdown by the end of it, follow my tried and true tricks below for unbelievably long wearing eye makeup. This is my “Bomb Proof” formula for eye makeup.

1. Start with an eye primer.  I like the one from Urban Decay in the purple tube.

2. Add a silicone based water proof concealer or foundation or an eye base that prevents colour creasing/fading.  Try FACE Atelier’s concealer duets or Ultra Foundation or Sorme’s eye base.

3. Now powder that lid ladies!!!  Use a colourless, super fine milled translucent powder.  I like Laura Mercier, Kett and FACE Atelier’s powder.

4. Hit it with some crease proof cream eye colour.  Some of my favourites include MAC Paints, Sephora waterproof pencils (chubby ones), L’Oreal long wear cream colour and Cover Girl liquid eye colours.  Do your lower lids if you like a little colour along your lower lash line.

5. Add a little more translucent colourless powder to lock that in.

6. Top off your upper and lower lids (if you’ve added colour there) with powder eye shadow.  Then add a little more pigment in the form of loose pigment.  I love FACE Atelier’s pigments, Naked, Obsessive Compulsive and Kett loose pigments.

7. For liner use a waterproof pencil, gel liner or liquid liner.  You can start with a pencil or gel, smudge over it with an eyeshadow in a matching colour and top it off with a stronger, un-smudged liner in pencil, gel or liquid.  Long wearing liner or gel liner also works well in the waterline.  It lasts way longer than khol.  Lining the inside of the eye doesn’t typically last the entire day though.  This is the one thing that may need touching up.   If you don’t like colour on the waterline, try a nude pencil to brighten and remove any trace of red eye.  Nars has one that works and lasts amazingly well.  It’s great when you’re trying to hide lack of sleep :)  Some of my other favourite brands for liners include Makeup Forever, Mac, Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier and Revlon.

8. If you can manage lashes, add a few singles in different lengths, curl your lashes then coat them with a waterproof mascara that’s gentle on the lashes.  Try FACE Atelier’s “cry baby”.   If any glue is visible along your lash line, add a little more liner to cover it up.

That’s it…I guarantee you can sleep in this, wake up and go to breakfast or brunch looking fabulous!

APRIL 2012 BEAUTY ARTICLE

BEAUTY MUST HAVE’S

1. A foundation and/or concealer that stays put!!  Try silicone based formulas that are oil free.  These are usually slide proof and creaseproof.

Some of my favourite brands: FACE Atelier, Makeup Forever, Clarins Everlasting. These just stay on even if I’m wringing out my shirt from humidity.  You will look fresh throughout the day.  FACE atelier’s concealer stays crease free!

2. An illuminating liquid for glowing skin. What woman doesn’t want skin that looks healthy and incredibly fresh and radiant.  I mix this into the foundation for skin that just glows.  For a real looking “fake” tan I add a darker, bronze illuminator.  It also

brightens the complexion for natural looking radiance.

Try adding FACE atelier’s Ultra Sheer in Champagne and/or Bronze.

3. A Cheek and lip stain.  Go ahead, run for the bus, talk, eat…just do your thing!  A stain stays put!  Dab it on your lips for a rosy natural glow and budge and fade proof cheek colour.  Rub it into your lips for a natural rosy lip that’s not overdone.

One of my favourites: Benefit’s, Benetint

4.  A light dose of powder bronzer & blush.  Bronzer gives a little colour, a little glow and it sculpts cheekbones too.  When cheek powder is layered over the cheek stain, it’s not going anywhere.  You can go through the day at the office and then head on out for drinks, still looking good!

For bronzer try: Nars in Laguna Beach, Fresh Minerals Bronzing kit or FACE atelier in Brazilian Blaze.

For blush: Nars in Orgasm or Gina or Torrid for warmer, darker skin tones and Clinique in Iced Lotus for cooler paler skin tones or Smouldering Plum for darker skin tones.

5. Waterproof liner.  I like kohl pencils but anyone with an oilier lid or eyes that may water, should avoid them.  Try a pencil in a waterproof formula to avoid a tragic mess by the end of the day!

My favorites:  Bobbi Brown’s gel liner or Mac’s waterproof pencil or gel liners, Revlon Colorstay pencils and Nars 12hr wear pencils.

6. Long wearing lip colour.  You want that pucker to last as long as possible and hopefully make it through your afternoon meeting.

A new found favourite of mine: Maybelline’s 14 hour lipstick.  AWESOME!

7. Eyebrow pencils that stay on.  If it’s humid out and you’ve filled in your brows, you don’t want to have a casualty by the end of day.  If you’re heading to the gym after work, it would be great to take your brows there with you and then take them home too. :)

A new found favourite of mine: Gosh eyebrow pens.  They glide on easy and stay on.  You could sleep in it.  I also like Sorme eyebrow pencils and I also like to use a soft brown gel liner sometimes.

8. Colourless setting powder to lock it all in place and keep shine at bay.  Colourless powder is best as it won’t build up or change colour throughout the day.

A favourite brand of mine: Kett Cosmetics.  Great translucent powder which looks amazing in high def.  So it’ll look great in person too.  I also love the translucent colourless powder from FACE atelier.

9. An eye base.  If you are going to wear eyeshadow and you want it to stay fresh looking, you’ll have to start with an eye base.   There are other tips in application techniques that help….stay tuned for those tips in my next article.

Try: Urban Decay, Laura Mercier or Nars all have amazing eye bases that keep color crease and smudge free.

10. A setting mist for when you’re all done.  A setting mist really works to lock your look in place and keep makeup on.

My personal favourite: FACE Atelier’s “Face Finish”.

11. Fresh looking lip gloss.  You’ll need to touch up that kisser girls.  I love a dewy lip; it looks youthful and makes lips look fuller.

Try: Lancome Juicy Tubes, “Simmer”.  This colour looks great on almost every single skin tone I’ve ever put it on.  I also like Rimmel, and Sephora’s long wearing lip gloss/cream which are both budget friendly.

12. A nice mascara that’s easy on the lashes and comes off without too much effort.    Every lash is a treasure…avoid losing them & keep them safe!  Avoid waterproof mascara for daily wear.

Some of my favourite mascaras: Mac “plush” mascara in black.  This really pumps up  lashes and comes off easy at night but wears well during the day.   L’Oreal Voluminuous in Carbon Black.

Happy Shopping!

"Let Them Eat Cake"

Loved the setting and the vibe of this photo shoot that was shot in Toronto.  I used Mac’s “Sushi Flower” eye shadow on the left and Laura Mercier’s “Lilac” on the right.  For perfect glowing porcelain skin  I used Face Atelier Ultra Foundation in Ivory mixed with a little of their Zero Minus and Champagne.

I used one of my favorite OPI polishes “Heart Throb” on the model’s nails.  It’s such a clean fresh color and I loved how well it worked with the dress.  For a true period feel I mixed black and brown gel eyeliner together and added a couple of moles and then darkened and strongly defined the model’s brows.

December 2011 Beauty Article: How To Do A Clean & Natural Makeup

How To Do Clean & Natural Makeup

To avoid lack lustre pasty skin & puffy eyes and rid yourself of dark circles,  follow the simple beauty steps listed below.  You’ll look polished and put together in 10 minutes or less.  With a little effort, looking good won’t feel like  you’re about to climb Mount Kilimanjaro!

1. Splash your face with freezing ice cold water to tighten pores, ease swelling and take the red out of eyes.  This also guarantees that you will  WAKE UP :)

2. Warm your face and eye creams on your fingertips/palms and gently press and pat into your skin to stimulate circulation and add glow.

3. Apply an illuminating concealer on the upper and lower eye lids and inner eyes to brighten.

4. Blend a mineral foundation in a powder form over the entire face as it blends effortlessly and makes the skin look natural, fresh and dewy.  It also is great for sensitive skin and will heal irritation too!   Skip it only if you have absolutely perfect skin without a blemish or any unevenness or redness.  Call me if this is you….I’d love to share your secrets to perfect skin!

5. Warm your cheeks and upper and lower eye lids with a little bronzer.  Use a bronzer without a lot of sparkly flecks in it.  If you will be out in daylight it will not look good.  Opt for sheen over sparkle for daytime.

6. Sculpt the face and eyes with a soft sheen champagne coloured eye shadow.  Apply under the arch of your eyebrows, in the centre of your eyelids, at the inner eye, over your cheekbones/apples, along the upper lip line and the bridge of the nose.

7. Add a little chocolate brown waterproof liner along the upper lash line and into the roots of your lashes.  If your lashes are sparse along your lower lash line, use a little liner here too for added definition.  Now curl your lashes and apply at least 2 coats of black mascara.  Curling the lashes makes eyes look bigger and brighter and lengthens the look of your eye lashes.

8. Brighten your eye colour and face with a little peachy pink cream cheek colour.  DAB it onto the apples of your cheeks.  DO NOT RUB this in.  You’ll remove all your bronzer and mineral powder.  Smile to see your apples, and you’ll feel good doing it too!   Follow up with a matching coloured powder blush applied over the apples; layering the colour will give you a super long lasting finish.

9. Fill sparse spots in your brows with a brow pencil that matches your brow’s hair colour.  If it’s humid, make sure it’s waterproof.   It’s smart to get your brows shaped by a pro a  couple of times a year so that you always look your best.

10. Now for the lips….you can try a long wearing lip colour with matching lip liner and gloss for the perfect pucker. :)   Gloss adds fullness and looks great too.

11. Finish off with a misting of setting spray to seal your makeup.  If your skin is on the drier side, you can use a misting of moisture spray before the setting spray for a fresher look.

And… don’t forget to smile ’cause when you do, the world smiles back :)

Cheers,

Georgia Spyra
